DCAA Audits And Job Cost Accounting Systems

It can be a real learning experience for small businesses to grow into government contracting. The particularly hard part of that process can be dealing with procurement officials and undergoing DCAA audits. It requires in-depth knowledge of the requirements and tactical application to follow the business process requirements to meet the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) or Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) for contracts.

DCAA and other Federal agencies do not approve the cost accounting practices of accounting software, but do approve job cost accounting practices for contractors that comply with FAR or CAS.

Job cost accounting that is compliant with FAR or CAS can affect your estimating structure, your general ledger, future indirect rates planning, and structure of general & administrative overheads. DCAA requires that keep your government contracts direct costs separate from your commercial work. FAR and CAS do not permit certain expressly unallowable costs to be charged to government contracts directly, or indirectly. You will be subjected to period audits to confirm that no unallowable cost has found its way into your cost estimates and billing of a government contract.

DCAA audits are performed on cost proposals at the request of the Procurement Contracting Officer (PCO). A DCAA audit is performed to authenticate your direct and indirect rates against your budget forecasts, labor category pricing, vendor quotes, contingent hire agreements, subcontractor proposals and all the other data that relates to the cost volumes of the proposals. Strategic FAR advisors provide complete Federal Procurement Consulting solutions to help you create cost proposals that comply with proposal criteria and can pass a DCAA audit.

Strategic FAR Advisors, through developing a specific approach for your company, helps you with Federal procurement strategies, accounting and DCAA audit compliant solutions in areas that include long range planning and budgeting, job cost accounting, pricing, time-keeping, indirect cost allocations, purchasing and billing.
